All job seekers should be networking

According to career experts, winter internships, a well written resume and networking skills give job seekers a leg up in the search for a new job. Tom Dezell, career services adviser for the Department of Labor Workforce Development office said that job hunting is all about “knowing people.” Job seekers in search of jobs and internships should talk to everyone they know in order to link themselves to the world of professional development, Dezell said.

He encourages the pursuit of internship opportunities because they’re a “win-win” situation. While the job seeker gains experience, the employer receives free help. Job seekers get the chance to get their foot in the door and may even land a permanent position. Internships can also be great places to network. Networking is vital for professionals of all ages because in today’s economy, a 20-year-old job may not be available tomorrow.

All job seekers should be networking and searching both online and off. When searching online, use job search engines to save you time. Career experts also recommend visiting niche job boards and specialty career sites. Often these sites have opportunities that are not posted on the big job boards. Other techniques like blogging and participating in online discussion groups can help ease the transition from unemployed and qualified to an experienced professional.
