Summer 2008 Job Market Better Than You Think

Posted by Rob Tue, 05 Aug 2008 14:33:31 GMT

Abridged: The Heritage Foundation

With gas prices high and the housing market weakening, economic anxieties are worrying many Americans. It’s easy to believe good jobs are increasingly hard to find. The truth is, the economy is constantly in flux, as technology and consumer preferences change. Many good jobs have disappeared over the past 30 years. So have many menial, low-wage positions. But, this picture is incomplete. Entrepreneurs create new jobs even as existing companies go under.

Looking at the overall economy paints a different picture than the one you see on the news. Government data show employers are creating more jobs in high-paying occupations. Technology and innovation have transformed the work most Americans do. But, machines cannot think for people. Employers need more skilled and educated workers who can think and create and innovate. The economy has shifted away from jobs that require physical labor towards jobs that require interpersonal skills and brainpower. This is good news for American workers.

Americans should celebrate the economic transitions that reduce manual labor and repetitive tasks. These same transitions are enabling them to use their individual talents on the job. The economy now provides more opportunities for upward mobility than existed a generation ago. This means higher incomes for American workers. The annual earnings of the average American worker have risen more than one-sixth since 1993.

SavannahJobs.com and Savannahmenu.com Announce Partnership

Posted by Rob Mon, 07 Jul 2008 14:37:42 GMT

Savannahjobs.com is the most visited job posting board in the Savannah area. Savannahmenu.com is the area’s premier on-line dining directory.

It seems only natural that the two would partner.

With the help of Savannahjobs.com, Savannahmenu.com has a new, and much needed, opportunity for its clients, a faster and more efficient way to find employees.

“It is my pleasure to announce that Savannahjobs.com can now be accessed from Savannahmenu.com,” says Savannahmenu.com General Manager, Dominic Moraco. “Savannahjobs.com is the most visited job site in the Coastal Empire, and this partnership offers strong support for our restaurant clients that are seeking employees.”

Clients of Savannahmenu.com can post available jobs with the company’s own job posting site, but the listing doesn’t just stay on their site. Savannahjobs.com will then submit the listing to its entire family of sites as well as its own.

“Having the capacity to host Savannahmenu.com’s job posting board gives Savannahjobs.com the ability to list the job in a multitude of places giving Savannahmenu.com clients the chance to find the right employees at the right time,” comments Savannahjobs.com President, Rob Jones.

Since its inception in 2000, Savannahmenu.com has grown to serve more than 120 area restaurants. Savannahjobs.com is also partnering with Savannahmenu.com to highlight the hard work and dedication of their client’s employees. The monthly Hospitality Night events offer giveaways and prizes for area restaurant employees, while different restaurants serve as location and food distributers.

“This event is one of the best ways to celebrate employees,” says Jones. “Singing the praises of those that work for you every day is a great way to build morale and loyalty.”

Savannahjobs.com was launched in 2000 and is currently the most visited internet job board in the Savannah area. Their family of sites includes blufftonjobs.com, hiltonheadislandjobs.com, goldenislesjobs.com, statesborojobs.com and jobsinkennesaw.com.

Job Hunting Alert

Posted by Rob Mon, 02 Jun 2008 19:56:30 GMT

This article does a good job of summarizing the privacy concerns of putting your resume online. Please take a few minutes to read it.

Job hunting alert: From USA Today Weekend

“Only use a job-search site that posts its privacy policy on its website, and read it carefully.

Posting your resume online can help you land a new job fast. But job hunting sites are also one of the newest breeding grounds for identity thieves. Here are some tips from the advocacy group Privacy Rights Clearinghouse.

Limit yourself to sites that mask your contact info. Your full name, address, phone number and other data should be left off your online resume. Employers must get your permission to see details. (If you do go with an “unmasked” site, use a temporary e-mail address.)

Be alert to sketchy offers. Identity thieves may e-mail you with a “great” opportunity, then ask for personal information. Ignore any e-mail that asks for money or your ID.

Never e-mail your Social Security number to a potential employer. Except for some government jobs, employers don’t need it until well into the hiring process.

Make sure that you can delete your resume once you get hired. Some sites may keep your information archived, legally, for years. “

Understanding Job Ads???

Posted by Rob Thu, 15 May 2008 16:05:55 GMT

Figuring out what potential employers want through their job advertisements can be one of the most stressful parts of job hunting. But whether a soon-to-be college graduate looking for that first job or a longtime worker searching for a different job, local human resource experts say there are ways for an applicant to determine if they’re a good candidate for the job.

One of the common misconceptions of people searching for a job is they think they have to be a complete master of it. That’s not what they (the employers) are looking for. Companies expect to have to do some training with their new employees. Sometimes job listings ask for preferred or required qualifications. Don’t let that discourage you from applying for a position you want because you may have other experience that offsets a preferred or required qualification.

For example, college graduates often have really good experience because they’ve worked in retail sales or public relations. Job seekers also shouldn’t let a job title steer them in a different direction either. If you carefully read the ad, you could qualify for some positions. Different firms might just give a different title to the same job you’ve been doing.

Having and Developing Marketable Skills are the Key to Employment

Posted by Rob Fri, 25 Apr 2008 12:56:28 GMT

Despite the bleak statistics, some sectors are actually showing growth, including government, education, healthcare and technology. “This year we’re expanding in all areas,” said Eric Scharf, a spokesman for Cell Signaling Technology. “There are senior scientists, research scientists, product developers. We’re also growing in the support areas, which include information technology, legal, marketing, sales, customer service, and all other areas which support the core business.”

Employment opportunities also vary depending on where you live in the U.S.. “In terms of regions, the strongest job performance has been in the South. They have the lowest unemployment rate now. The highest unemployment rate is in the Midwest, and that’s primarily because of the exposure to manufacturing in the Midwest,” explained Gilliam.

Major metropolitan cities, including New York, Dallas, Houston and Seattle have some of the lowest rates of unemployment. Job seekers first and foremost should focus on developing their own skills and professional education. For college-educated individuals the unemployment rate is just two percent. The more skills and education you have, the better opportunity you will have to find work.

Employers Find it Hard to Attract and Retain Younger Workers

Posted by Rob Thu, 17 Apr 2008 16:55:09 GMT

Today’s prize recruits are the bright young people who have grown up with new technology, who network and collaborate, and who respond instinctively to the demands of business in the Internet age. Rather than being driven by the prospect of lifetime employment, they crave learning opportunities and an exciting, fast-paced environment.

They are variously referred to as Generation Y or the Net Generation to reflect what makes them really different. Employers are finding that attracting and retaining them can be challenging. They have high expectations for rapid career growth, greater demands for work/life balance, and the need for clear and frequent performance feedback.

Competition is growing fierce. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated that 300,000 of the new information technology jobs created will go unfilled. In today’s war for talent, attracting and keeping members of the Net Generation requires new mindsets and capabilities, and managers need to acquire new skills to keep this generation engaged.
