Very Interesting Article about the state of the job market, when job seekers are giving employers false information on their resumes.

“A strong resume and interview may place job seekers in the running for a position, but a new survey from OfficeTeam finds the results of a reference check can be the real deal maker — or breaker. Managers interviewed said they remove more than one in five (21 percent) candidates from consideration after speaking to their professional contacts. ” Read the Full article

How to Get the Job You Want

Posted by Rob Mon, 07 Feb 2011 17:29:03 GMT

After 15 years in the hospice industry, Philip Kittle lost his job.

The first thing he and his wife, Lynette, did was to make a list of hospices in their area and send a resume and cover letter to each one – regardless of whether the company was hiring.

Sound ridiculous to send resumes to companies not hiring?

The New Rules of Job Interviewing for Boomers

Posted by Rob Wed, 26 Jan 2011 21:52:54 GMT

My inbox is deluged with job-search queries. That’s understandable: the job market remains tepid, and Kiplinger’s doesn’t see the unemployment rate dropping below 9% this year.

Some of my correspondents want suggestions on job-search direction or particular employers. Most of them do not. The vast majority of folks seek guidance on the ultra-specific Do’s and Don’ts in a job search. “Is it okay to wear capri pants to an interview, if I wear a jacket in the same fabric?” one lady inquires.

Company Accused of Firing Over Facebook Post

Posted by Rob Wed, 10 Nov 2010 22:02:27 GMT

STEVEN GREENHOUSE, On Tuesday November 9, 2010, 5:16 pm EST In what labor officials and lawyers view as a ground-breaking case involving workers and social media, the National Labor Relations Board has accused a company of illegally firing an employee after she criticized her supervisor on her Facebook page.

This is the first case in which the labor board has stepped in to argue that workers’ criticisms of their bosses or companies on a social networking site are generally a protected activity and that employers would be violating the law by punishing workers for such statements.

All job seekers should be networking

Posted by Rob Wed, 03 Nov 2010 13:44:26 GMT

According to career experts, winter internships, a well written resume and networking skills give job seekers a leg up in the search for a new job. Tom Dezell, career services adviser for the Department of Labor Workforce Development office said that job hunting is all about “knowing people.” Job seekers in search of jobs and internships should talk to everyone they know in order to link themselves to the world of professional development, Dezell said.

He encourages the pursuit of internship opportunities because they’re a “win-win” situation. While the job seeker gains experience, the employer receives free help. Job seekers get the chance to get their foot in the door and may even land a permanent position. Internships can also be great places to network. Networking is vital for professionals of all ages because in today’s economy, a 20-year-old job may not be available tomorrow.

All job seekers should be networking and searching both online and off. When searching online, use job search engines to save you time. Career experts also recommend visiting niche job boards and specialty career sites. Often these sites have opportunities that are not posted on the big job boards. Other techniques like blogging and participating in online discussion groups can help ease the transition from unemployed and qualified to an experienced professional.
